Back in Action: Miami Varsity Esports Recap Weeks 0 and 1

The start of the spring semester at Miami University also brings the return of competition for Miami’s Varsity Esports Teams. With the seasons starting back up for both the ESC and MEC conferences in January, our players have already jumped back into the action. Alongside this, Miami’s esports lounge also received a slight upgrade over winter break and is now open for players of all skill levels.

League of Legends

The League of Legends team is back in full force and started the season with a bang. Last week on January 27th, they began their run in the ESC conference with a 2 – 0 win against Eastern Michigan University. This week on January 31st, they continued their win streak with another 2 – 0 game, defeating Bowling Green State University. To finish out this first week of classes, the team secured another 2 – 0 win, this time against Central Michigan University on February 3rd. Overall, the team is now sitting with a perfect 3 – 0 record in the ESC.

Overwatch

Miami’s Varsity Overwatch team also started their season before the start of classes and with a fantastic showing in the ESC conference. Last week on January 23rd, the team took on Northern Kentucky University and won the game 3 – 0. This past week the team then started classes and continued their run in the ESC with another 3 – 0 win, this time against Northeastern University. These first two weeks of competition leave them with a perfect 2 – 0 record in the ESC conference.

While also playing in the ESC conference, Miami’s Varsity Overwatch team is also battling it out in the University of Kentucky LAN qualifiers on January 31st. However, the games didn’t quite swing their way with the team losing 0 – 2 to both University of Texas at Dallas and Texas A&M University. Their record currently stands at 0 -2 for the qualifiers, but there are still plenty more games to come this season.

Rocket League

The Varsity Rocket League team has also begun their season in the MEC. Taking on Cleveland State University on January 31st, the team brought home a 3 – 0 win. They then followed that up with another 3 – 0 win against Ashland University on February 1st, successfully improving their MEC record to a perfect 2 – 0.

Esports Lounge Update

Alongside our players getting back into the action this semester, Miami’s esports lounge also is getting back into the swing of things. Over winter break, the space received an upgrade – new PCs, keyboards, and mice have been installed and added to the lounge. The refurbished space is now open for free play from 11 am until closing at Armstrong Student Center. Check Miami’s website for information about the space!
