Matches and Qualifiers and LANS, Oh My!: Miami Varsity Esports Recap Weeks 2 and 3

Miami University’s Varsity Esports Teams continued to ramp up the competition these past two weeks. With many teams still playing in the tournaments and leagues they started at the beginning of the semester, Overwatch has also begun their run in the UC LAN qualifiers in these past two weeks. To cap things off, the Rocket League team and a few players from the varsity Super Smash Bros Ultimate team traveled to Deerfield, IL for the Midwest Esports Conference Spring Clash.

League of Legends

The varsity League of Legends team continued their run in the ESC conference with a game against Northern Kentucky University on February 7th. They unfortunately lost the match 0 – 2, but came back on February 10th to take a 2 – 0 win against Western Michigan University. To close out last week, the team took two really close but unfortunate losses against Northeastern University on February 14th (1 – 2) and Kent State University on February 17th (0 – 2). The team is still maintaining a winning record in the ESC, sitting at 4 – 3 after these games.

Overwatch

The varsity Overwatch team had an incredibly busy schedule as of late, playing a total of 7 games across these past two weeks. They started off with a win in the UC LAN Qualifiers, defeating Ohio University 2 – 0 on February 5th. They followed that up with another win, 3 – 1, against Kent State University in the ESC that very next day. To finish out the run of games that week, the team took two 2 – 0 wins on February 7th: they defeated both UH Circuit and Cinnamon Toast Crunch in the UKY LAN Qualifiers.

The team continued their winning streak into the next week, starting it off on February 12th with a win against Northern Kentucky in the UC LAN Qualifier; they have successfully secured themselves a spot in the LAN with this win. The next day the team took another victory in the ESC, beating Central Michigan University 3 – 0. The team then finished out their week with one more game in the UKY LAN Qualifier, beating Ohio State University on February 14th. The team is currently sitting undefeated in ESC (4 – 0) and UC Lan Qualifiers (2 – 0), and have improved their record in the UKY LAN Qualifiers to 3 – 2.

Rocket League

The varsity Rocket League team continued their dominance in the MEC conference these past two weeks. To start it off, they traveled to Deerfield, Illinois to participate in the MEC Spring Clash LAN on February 10th and 11th. The team ended 10 – 2 in the double round robin phase on day one, securing them the 2nd seed spot in the bracket play on day two. Moving onto the second day, the team placed 2nd in the bracket. Over the entire weekend, the team only dropped sets to Cleveland State University, further proving their dominance in the league.

Once the team returned from the LAN, they continued their play in the regular season for the MEC. On February 14th they won against Illinois College, 3 – 0 and furthered their winning streak the next day with a win against Cornell College, 3 – 1. One of their players, Riskii, remarked on the team’s success saying “As a full team of Freshman with little to no expectations, we are just vibing and trying to have fun with the season: and it’s working!”. And he is not wrong, as the team is currently at an undefeated 4 – 0 record in the regular season of MEC, securing them the #1 spot in the standings.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Maimi’s varsity Super Smash Bros Ultimate also joined the Rocket League team in traveling to the MEC LAN on February 10th and 11th. In the open singles bracket on day 1, Lombardi took 1st place with Afterglow taking 4th. They then followed that up with an undefeated run in the open doubles bracket, with players Afterglow and Lombardi teaming up to secure 1st place in the bracket.
