Overwatch Overload: Miami Varsity Esports Recap Weeks 4 and 5

Miami University’s Varsity Esports Teams were certainly kept busy these past weeks. With an onslaught of games across three different teams, the varsity esports teams played a combined total of 21 games across 14 days; over half of which were Overwatch matches! Below is a summary of all of the matches and results.

League of Legends

The varsity League of Legends team kicked off their week with a game on Feb 21st. Unfortunately, they fell 1 – 2 to Buffalo in the ESC and followed it up with another close game on the 24th against Ball State (0 – 2). Last week, the team started off with a tough loss to Akron on the 28th of February, 1 – 2, but followed it up with an exciting win – 2 – 0 – to Ohio University on March 2nd. The team is now sitting 5 – 6 in ESC and hoping to continue improving their record these coming weeks!

Overwatch

The varsity Overwatch team schedule was jam-packed these last few weeks. On February 19th, the team took a 2 – 0 win against Centre College in the UC Queen City Clash qualifiers, ending on a 3 – 0 record and qualifying for the LAN. Moving on, the team then took several back-to-back wins starting with a 3 – 0 against Western Michigan on February 20th (ESC). This was then followed up with a 1 – 2 win against University of Houston Premiere on February 21st (UKY LAN Qualifiers), a 3 – 0 win against Toledo on February 22nd (ESC), and a fantastic winning streak of 3 – 0 wins in the PSU LAN Qualifiers on February 24th and 25th (versus Albion, Mississippi State, Arizona Penn State, and UMD) starting them off with a 4 – 0 record in the qualifiers. After that, the team continued their string of wins with a 3 – 0 victory over Ohio University on February 27th and a 2 – 1 victory over Columbia International on February 28th, improving their records to 7 – 0 and 4 – 3 in the ESC and UKY LAN Qualifiers respectively.

To finish out this intense week for games, the Overwatch team traveled to the University of Cincinnati’s Innovation Lab and Esports Arena for the Queen City Clash LAN, hosted by UC on March 2nd and 3rd. The team started off in the winner’s bracket, taking on the University of Kentucky. Miami won the game, 3 – 0, and advanced to take on the University of Cincinnati in the next round. The team fought hard but unfortunately lost to UC, 2 – 3, and dropped into the loser’s bracket. On the second day, the team came back to continue their run at the Queen City Clash. They took two early victories against Cleveland State and Purdue, the games ending in 3 – 0 and 3 – 1 respectively. The team then moved on to the grand finals to face off against the University of Cincinnati once again. Unfortunately, Miami took another loss, 1 – 3, but still finished in 2nd place for the Queen City Clash.

Rocket League

Miami’s varsity Rocket League team continued their play in the MEC league these past two weeks. On February 21st, the team took an unfortunate loss, 1 – 3, to Ohio Northern University. However, they quickly bounced back to claim another victory on February 29th. The team faced off against Simpson College and walked away with a 3 – 1 win, improving their MEC League Play record to 5 – 1.
