Varsity Esports Semester Recap Fall 2023

Varsity Esports Semester Recap Fall 2023

This Fall was a great start to the year for Miami University’s Varsity Esports teams. Several teams qualified for post-season competitions, with almost every team having a positive win rate for the season. Before heading into the Spring semester, let’s take a look at some of the notable accomplishments from this Fall season from every team.

Halo

Miami’s varsity Halo team started off the season incredibly strong with several wins in the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) College Halo league. Their 4 – 3 record in the regular season qualified them for playoffs alongside 35 other teams. Halo finished their season with a top-12 finish in the playoffs after a short run in both the winner’s bracket and the loser’s bracket of the playoffs. The team is looking to continue growing and improving this upcoming Spring season.

League of Legends

The varsity League of Legends team had a pretty chill season this semester. They competed in the Crunch Time League which featured weekly best-of-1 games. The team unfortunately finished the season with a losing record, resulting in them falling out of the tournament. The team is now gearing up for the Collegiate League of Legends (CLOL) in the Esports Collegiate (ESC) conference this Spring.

NBA2K

Maimi’s NBA2K team also had a slow season this Fall. The team began building up connections to Miami’s Varsity Basketball team – including a watch party at one of the home games. They also continued networking with other colleges to find games and eventually build a stronger collegiate scene for the game. The team is looking to continue growing stronger this Spring semester and eventually start a collegiate-only league for the game.

Overwatch

The varsity Overwatch team had an incredibly busy season this Fall with several matchups every week. The team qualified for the University of Kentucky (UKY) Fall Invitational and then went on to finish in the top 12 at the LAN playoffs. Alongside that, the team also played in the Overwatch Collegiate Homecoming tournament, finishing 33rd out of 274 this year. Finally, the team ended their season with a top 7th finish in the CECC Qualifiers. Miami’s Overwatch team is looking to compete in ESC, Overwatch Collegiate Championship, and qualify for another UKY LAN this Spring.

Rocket League

Miami’s varsity Rocket League team spent this Fall rebuilding their team, as it is all freshmen this year. However, they were still a strong contender in the ESC league, going on to finish in the top 8 in the playoffs. After a strong start with a new team, the Rocket League team is looking to compete in the Collegiate Rocket League (CRL), Midwest Esports Conference (MEC), and possibly the NECC.

Super Smash Bros

The varsity Super Smash Bros team had an absolutely killer season this Fall. Early in the season, they had several players place well at Riptide, with notable finishes including a 17th place from Phirb and a 25th place from Scoops out of over 700 entries. The team then went on to compete at Saturday Trials 2, with Scoops finishing 4th in the singles tournament and Lombardi and Scoops winning the doubles tournament. Finally, they dominated in the MEC, winning in the Grand Finals without dropping a single set. This Spring, the team is looking to find some more open tournaments and collegiate leagues to enter.

VALORANT

Miami’s VALORANT team had a busy Fall semester, with the team splitting in two (VAL Red and VAL White). The team made it to playoffs in every collegiate league they attended, finishing in the top 32 of the Collegiate Esports Association (CEA) conference. The team also finished in the top 8 of the ESC playoffs and the CECC Midwest Regional playoffs. The team is looking to continue staying busy this Spring semester and play in the Collegiate VALORANT league (CVAL), CEA, and possibly the NECC.
